Dallas Wings Sign Sug Sutton to Rest-of-Season Contract
A veteran point guard added for Dallas to navigate injuries and improve backcourt depth.
The Dallas Wings have added experience and depth to their backcourt, signing veteran guard Sug Sutton to a rest-of-season contract. To create roster space for Sutton, Dallas waived second-year guard JJ Quinerly.
Sutton joins Dallas after beginning the 2026 season with the Portland Fire. Sutton was selected by Portland in the expansion draft from the Washington Mystics, she appeared in three games for the Fire before being waived on May 21. During her brief stint in Portland, she averaged 11.3 points, 1.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game.
“We are excited to add Sug Sutton to our roster,” Dallas Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Curt Miller stated after the signing. “Sug is an experienced point guard in the WNBA, starting 43 games during the 2025 season. She plays with great pace and adds a quality defender on the perimeter. We’re happy to welcome Sug back to the state of Texas.”
Sutton established herself as a reliable contributor during her time with the Mystics. Across two seasons in Washington, she appeared in 50 games and started 43 contests during the 2025 season. She averaged 7.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists last season, ranking 17th in the WNBA in assists per game.
Before returning to Washington, Sutton spent parts of the 2023 and 2024 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury. She played in 62 games for Phoenix and enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2023, averaging 8.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. Her assist average ranked ninth in the league that season, highlighting her ability to create opportunities for teammates.
Adding Sutton gives Dallas valuable backcourt depth at a time that is needed with the team dealing with injuries to their two point guards. Paige Bueckers recently missed the game against the Portland Fire as a precaution after suffering an incident with her ankle against the Phoenix Mercury, that caused her to go to the locker room during the game. Odyssey Sims has been sidelined the last two games after suffering an ankle injury against the Los Angeles Sparks. Sutton’s experience gives Jose Fernandez another playmaker who can run the offense and create for others, while providing stability whenever injuries occur.
The signing shows Dallas is solely focused on not only competing for a playoff spot, but trying to position themselves as a team that is capable of advancing in the postseason. Following the loss to Portland and seeing the team without Bueckers and Sims, Miller quickly waived Quinerly, who has played just two games this season, and signed Sutton. A veteran like Sutton can contribute and help Dallas navigate injuries and stay competitive as the playoff race tightens later in the season.
