Dallas Wings Sign Haley Jones to Developmental Player Contract
After being waived by Portland Fire, Haley Jones reunites with a Wings team she started 16 games for in 2025
The Dallas Wings have signed guard/forward Haley Jones to a Developmental Player contract.
Jones returns to Dallas after spending the 2025 season with the Wings before being selected by the Portland Fire in April’s Expansion Draft. She appeared in five games for Portland this season, averaging 5.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.0 assists.
Her return gives Dallas a player who is already familiar with the organization and many of the players on the roster. That familiarity should allow Jones to step in seamlessly and contribute when called upon without requiring a lengthy adjustment period.
Jones initially joined the Wings on a hardship contract in June 2025 before signing a rest-of-season deal on July 9. She appeared in 24 games for Dallas, making 16 starts and posting career highs of 8.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 0.8 steals per game. The former Stanford standout was selected sixth overall by the Atlanta Dream in the 2023 WNBA Draft and spent her first two seasons in Atlanta. Across 113 career games, including 46 starts, Jones has averaged 4.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists.
While Jones provides valuable versatility as a ball-handler and playmaker, the move is somewhat surprising given the Wings’ current roster needs. Dallas has struggled defensively this season, and a defensive-minded frontcourt player may have addressed a more pressing need. Still, Jones’ ability to play multiple positions and her previous success with the Wings likely made her an attractive addition for one of the team’s developmental roster spots.
Under the WNBA’s new Developmental Player rules, teams receive two roster spots that sit outside the standard roster limit, creating opportunities for eligible early-career players and those with limited prior-season minutes. Developmental Players can be activated for up to 12 games each, with teams limited to 24 total developmental activations during the season.
